Miniature Photography Ideas

Miniature photography is a new trend in photography dome. It is the effect to make photo subjects smaller than the real life. Conventionally a tilt shift or top and bottom blurry area has been produced in a miniature photography. The main objective of this genre in photography to capture the normal big things in a smaller possible form.

Requirements for miniature photography ideas:

  • Model/s [Biyas and Nandita from my side]
  • Props like toy car, doll etc.
  • Single colorued wall or background
  • A table

Choose a well-lighted room or rooftop. Soft light resist the harsh shadows for maximum photo shoot. I prefer the time from 7 am to 10 am or 4 pm to 6 pm.

My first miniature ideas is a model starring to the other model. Here one model is in normal size and the other one in a minimal size.

Camera specifications:

  • Autofocus with matrix or evaluative metering mode
  • Shutter speed: 1/125 s
  • Aperture: f/4 or f/5.6
  • ISO: 100-400 based on the light condition

I compose my thought by taking a single picture of the model [Nandita] where she raise her palm and starring in such a way so that audience can visualize that something in on her hand. Now I take second shot of the model [Biyas] in a crawling position and head up. Therefore, it looks like Biyas is starring to the other model [Nandita].

Now store the image files in computer hard drive. Open the first image file and edit normally for exposure correction, color tone, noise removal etc. save the file. Open the second image file and edit as above fashion. After completion of the editing the second image file, choose quick selection tool from Photoshop and select the subject.

Important note:

For second picture, you must choose a solid one colored wall or background. It helps to cut the subject easily. Choose the selected subject and drag it to the first image file. Automatically it turns into a new layer of the first image file.

Now go to Edit menu from PS and choose transform or simple press ctrl + T. drag one the corner box by pressing shift button from keyboard. It helps to squeeze down the image file proportionately.

When you are satisfied with the small image size, press the tick button form the menu bar. Now select the image and place it on the palm of the first image file [Nandita].

Almost done. Flattern all the layers and save the image file with a new name like (myfirst-miniature).

My next miniature ideas is Biyas is looking at Biyas. I shoot both the images and edit as above technique. Here I do a small change. Small Biyas is standing on the table.

Another miniature idea is little bit harder. Measurement is the key element in this miniature idea. Nandita grab the bicycle’s carrier of Biyas who is trying to fly in the air. Nandita takes the support of the car as if to strengthen her power.

Measurement of Nandita’s tow hand positions are vital. One hand for grabbing the bicycle’s carrier of Biyas and the other hand takes support of the toy car. I shoot the toy car very close so it looks bigger enough for the audience.

Now open the car image file first in PS. Edit for general correction like exposure, tone, noise etc. open Nandita’s image file and select the subject with quick selection tool and drag it into t heard image file. Free transform (ctrl+T) tool helps to resize the image of Nandita and place properly with the car. Open the third image file (Biyas) and select the subject using quick selection tool. Drag the subject [Biyas with bicycle] into the first image file [Car]. Free transform tool helps to resize the third image and set it in such a fashion so that the illusion come to audience mind that Biyas is trying to fly with her bicycle and Nandita is trying to hold her. Here I put second and third image in a smaller form and car image in normal shape.
