In the eighth year of his rule, Ashoka led a military campaign against Kalinga. It was resulting in a brutal conflict that claimed Kalinga War. It was of colossal nature in which as many as 1,00,000 were killed and 1,50,000 were taken captives.

The profound impact of witnessing such devastation stirred Ashoka’s conscience, prompting a personal conversion to Buddhism. This marked a turning point, leading him to champion the cause of righteous conduct, known as Ashoka Dhamma, across his vast empire.
