Studio Photoshoot Checklist
A studio photoshoot checklist is super important for any professional photographer. It helps you stay organized and makes sure you don’t forget anything. With a good checklist, your work will go faster, smoother, and with fewer problems.

BEFORE THE SHOOT (Planning & Prep)
Concept & Mood
- Define the purpose of the shoot (portrait, fashion, product, etc.)
- Create a mood board or reference photos
- Choose the theme, colors, and style
Model Coordination
- Confirm date, time, and location
- Send call sheet or schedule
- Share wardrobe and makeup guidelines
- Get model releases or product permissions (if needed)
Equipment Preparation
- Charge all camera and light batteries
- Format memory cards
- Clean lenses and camera sensor
- Pack backup gear (if shooting off-site)
STUDIO SETUP
Lighting Equipment
- Softboxes / Umbrellas
- Strobes / Speedlights
- Continuous lights (if needed)
- Light stands / Boom arms
- Reflectors / Diffusers
- Gels or modifiers (optional)
- Power cables and extension cords
Backgrounds & Surfaces
- Seamless paper / Muslin / Vinyl
- Background stand or wall mount
- Clamps or weights
- Sweep or floor covering (if full-body)
Props & Accessories
- Chairs, stools, or posing blocks
- Themed props (e.g., books, flowers, mirrors)
- Styling accessories (hats, scarves, jewelry)
HAIR, MAKEUP & WARDROBE
Styling
- Makeup kit (mattifying products, setting spray)
- Hair tools (combs, spray, pins)
- Lint roller and fabric tape
- Wardrobe options (main looks + backups)
- Steamer or iron for wrinkles
CAMERA GEAR & SETTINGS
Lenses & Cameras
- DSLR or mirrorless camera
- Primary lens (e.g., 50mm, 85mm)
- Backup lens or zoom lens
- Tripod or monopod (if needed)
- Tethering cable or wireless option (optional)
Camera Settings (Test & Lock)
- Shutter Speed: ~1/125s (sync with flash)
- Aperture: f/5.6 to f/11 (depending on subject)
- ISO: 100–200 for clean shots
- White Balance: Custom or Flash setting
- Set camera to RAW format
- Test exposure and lighting
DURING THE SHOOT
Posing & Composition
- Guide the model or subject into flattering poses
- Check composition and framing
- Watch for symmetry, eye lines, and posture
- Adjust lighting angles as needed
Monitor & Adjust
- Review shots on camera or tethered monitor
- Zoom in to check sharpness and focus
- Reapply makeup or adjust hair if needed
- Keep communicating with the model/client
AFTER THE SHOOT
Wrap-Up
- Backup photos immediately (on external drive or cloud)
- Take down and safely store lights and gear
- Roll up or clean the backdrop
- Pack props and wardrobe
- Clean up makeup and prep area
Post-Production Planning
- Review best shots for editing
- Send previews to client (if agreed)
- Begin retouching workflow (color correction, skin, etc.)
