Jumpology

Jumpology a new trend in today’s photography is jumping to reveal the joy, happiness and so on. I personally notice this huge trend in advertisement with teenagers, wedding parties, actors in celluloid to finish a scene within a high jump and freeze.

In 40’s and 50’s it became popular by Phillippe Halsman and he coined the term “Jumpology.” He said, ‘when you ask a person to jump, his attention is mostly directed towards the act of jumping and the mask falls so that the real person appears.’

Let’s discuss about some tips of jumpology which gives your photograph more vibrant, more lively and stunning.

Steps:

  1. Shoot in lower angle as much as you can. Ground shot or lie down on the ground and shoot the picture of a jumping subject. If you go much lower, you will get more space between ground and the subject.
  2. Remind your subject to be normal and do not tighten his/her face. It is very common. So, for capturing the right tone of laughing and jumping, normal expression is very much important.
  3. Instead of jumping up and down, have your subject try to create some body shapes which appears that they are floating rather than jumping.
  4. Use the burst or continuous mode of shutter speed for the perfect picture.
  5. Use a fast shutter speed to freeze the movement of the subject.
  6. Choose outdoor where you can shoot with plenty of lights.
  7. For cell phone users, fix a position, pre focus it. When the subject jumps, tap down and do not release the button of shutter release until the instant before they are right where you want them to be.

Note: Notice the first picture, Biyas tighten her face whereas next picture captures normal vibrant looks.
