Prelude of Dance Drama Shyama

Dance Drama Shyama is an epic composition by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. The story and script along with composition came from his poem “Porisodh” influenced by the Sanskrit Buddhist literature of Nepal. It was first staged at Asuthosh college auditorium, Kolkata in the year 1936. In 1938, Rabindranath Tagore reconstructed “Shyama” in the form of dance drama. His students of Shantiniketan performed first time in dance-drama form. The audiences were so indulged in it which turned it into a very popular dance drama. The legacy of “Shyama dance-drama” has continued till date.

The hero “Bajrasen” was falsified accused to steal the peerless necklace of the king. The court-dancer “Shyama” had been fallen in love with Bajrasen. She wanted to save Bajrasen’s life. Bajrasen also falls in love with her. She made a dangerous plan to save Bajrasen. She convinced her friend Uttiyo to take place at the scaffold instead of Bajrasen.
