In the course of his pilgrimage, Ananda, a Buddhist monk, arrives at Prakriti’s village. Seeking refreshment, he requests water from Prakriti, who is labeled an untouchable or ‘chandal.’ In response, Prakriti confides in Ananda about her marginalized status. Unperturbed, the monk asserts, “I am a human being, just like you, and all water is clean.” His counsel to Prakriti is one of empowerment, urging her to resist feelings of humiliation. Ananda’s words serve as a catalyst for Prakriti to embrace her authentic identity and challenge the inequitable societal norms imposed upon her.
